One of the oldest vegetables known to mankind is exactly onion. Almost all world cultures use it as an additive or spice in various recipes . Onion can be found in fresh, frozen, canned and dehydrated condition (form). Onion against many diseases is the recommendation of numbers of doctors.
It originates from Asia and Middle East, and is cultivated more than 5000 years. Egyptians especially valued it because with onion they paid workers who built the pyramids, while pharaohs placed a few onions in graves believing it would serve in the afterlife. In India except in food they used it as medicine. People used onion against many diseases.
Onions are rich with vitamin C, B 6 and flavonoids. They contain beta carotene, fiber and carbohydrates. The strong smell comes from the compounds rich with sulfur, responsible for his healing properties. The specific bitter taste is due to the ethereal oils. Thanks to these ingredients onion is responsible for improving appetite and digestion of food. Regular use of onion reduces the concentration of glucose, triglycerides and cholesterol in blood, as well as blood pressure. It protects the body from occurrence of atherosclerosis, heart attack and stroke. The onion significantly reduces risk of colon cancer and hemorrhoids, of course if you eat it often (this applies to those who can stand it because it’s hard to digest). The juice of this vegetable is commonly used to treat ulcers, acne, cuts and scrapes and insect bites. People also use it against dandruff and hair loss.
If you enter a large amount of onion juice you can irritate the stomach and cause nausea and vomiting. The recommendation is to consume small amounts of onion several times a day. People who suffer from inflammatory bowel disease should avoid it because it’s hard to digest and can worse the condition. The recommendations are to bake it or use it as spice in soups and stews (to boil along with other ingredients).
